I have wanted to tackle a 365 Project (366 in this case as it's a leap year) since my days at Ontario College of Art in the early 90's. But I knew myself well, and was certain it would end up incomplete like so many other projects in the past. I'm one of those people who always has more than a few projects on the go, and find myself jumping around between them like a madman afflicted with ADD. When I heard a small group of geocaching friends were going to attempt their own 365 Project, I decided that I would join in the fun, and that it might provide me the extra incentive to complete it. And besides, it will make an awesome photo album to look back on a single year in my life, day-by-day. And since painting has for my entire life, been my main focus creatively, the fact that this will be my first real photographic project with any sort of focus, is exciting, and should be a great learning experience.

Project: incomplete

I’m disappointed to admit defeat on this 365 project, in light of two major equipment failures. An external drive (not yet backed up) dies, taking with it 90% of every photo I’ve taken in the last 6 years. And today, my 50D has stopped working, with both the LCD display, and the shutter no longer working. I could continue, despite losing three days photos I had yet to post, and use only my iPhone and Canon G6 to carry on. But to be honest, it’s just not the same….

Day 251: I hadn’t planned on playing with a spinning flashlight again tonight, but while out for a walk, I couldn’t resist. I hadn’t come prepared, so I just improvised with my headlamp….

Day 249: One of those grab a shot while at work days….   Actually it has only recently started to feel like summer is coming to an end, and this sort of conveys that. First the flowers, then the leaves. The autumn is my favourite time of the year, not only for the colours, but as much for the more moderate temperatures, and cooler evenings.

Day 248: Today was another rainy day at work, but the job HAD to be finished. Half my day was spent drying out in the truck, and waiting for the rain to settle down to a light rain or completely stop. I could think of a several other places I would rather been at to watch the two bands of storms that rolled through the city today…

Day 247: After a long drive this weekend to Ottawa, I headed north this morning to grab a couple caches by kayak in the Burks Falls area. The real highlight of the day was a stop at the Screaming Heads, a property west of Burks Falls, where the landscape is full of large concrete figures, among other wonderful surprises. I have been here numerous times before, but this would be my first visit at night….   and I had a plan. I wish I could have taken my time, and spent the night carefully creating some images but seeing that I was still a few hours from home, and had to work in the morning, I kind of rushed through this one. Getting those spheres perfect takes a bit of practise….

Day 246: I had a little time before Quinn’s move in time this morning, so across the border to Gatineau again, and see what I could find to shoot. Again, I let some geocaches show me the way and found this pedestrian tunnel under a series of roads, parallel to a canal from the river. Several pieces of graffiti that I found there were quite unique in that they used not just the usual spray can, but incorporated what looked like brushwork and stencils as well for very detailed bit of work. Used my iPhone and my DSLR, but I am quite liking the new filters in the iPhone’s HDR Pro app.

Day 245: Spent today driving to Ottawa from Toronto, for a big day tomorrow; move in day for my son’s first year at University of Ottawa. Of course there wasn’t any opportunity to stop for photos during the day, so a night shot was in order. My first idea was to head towards the parliament buildings and get a nice night shot there, but to be honest, after all day driving the last thing I wanted to deal with was trying to find parking, etc.  So I headed across the river to Gatineau, Quebec and Jacques Cartier Park to grab a couple geocaches, one of which was along a new boardwalk at the river’s edge. The boardwalk has a great view of downtown Ottawa, including the Parliament Buildings, but I quite liked the lines of the MacDonald-Cartier Bridge instead.

Day 244:  A few posts ago, I mentioned how I “collect” certain types of images. One of those collections are of characters I find among the city’s graffiti. A little bit of talent among the usual scribbles and tags. Spotted this unusual guy this morning while grabbing a bite to eat.

Day 242: I’ve seen this type of photo all over the internet, and just had to give it a try myself. This is my first attempt, and I think it turned out OK. I used a battery powered light stick, which gave a thicker, blurred ball. I think next time I will use a smaller light source like LED lights. I also need to wear something black, since the letters on my t-shirt can be seen within the spehere.

Day 241:  Two thirds of my yard is grapevines, with the type of grapes that are used for making wine. And I don’t even make wine. I’ve taken a few photos out among the grapevines though, so they are good for something.

Day 240: Ok, so this isn’t the greatest photo, but it is the reason I got to quit work early today. After several hours working in the downpour, I finally had enough, and packed it up. Of course, by the time I got home, it had stopped. This is the rain on green aluminum flatstock, which I was using to cap windows on the customer’s house.

Day 238: Headed out to the Toronto Islands with a couple friends for a little bit of caching and some Munzee fun. I was looking forward to an afternoon on the islands, and figured on a good photography day. However, as I have done a few times, I had recently cleaned up all my cards, and forgot to repack them with my gear. So, without memory for the DSLR, I relied on my iPhone again. I discovered a couple new filters in my HDR Pro app that were part of a recent update, one of which is “XP Pro” and I used on this shot of a boardwalk on the island.
