Day 177: Today’s shot is of a part of my bookshelf, alot of which is old science fiction novels I had borrowed, or dug out of one of the many cardboard boxes that used to be in my father’s attic. My Dad was a ravenous reader, and the few exceptions to his steady consumption of classic sci-fi of his time, were Louis L’Amour westerns, Enforcer paperbacks, and war non-fiction. It was the piles of old sci-fi paperbacks that attracted me with their fantastic covers, and promise of even more fantastic places. With Father’s Day just past, I thought I’d post a memory of him…

Day 176: Decided to try a longer exposure then I usually do (5 minutes) down at the mouth of the Etobicoke Creek. Really need to learn how to use the custom functions on my camera to enable the long exposure noise reduction, and see how well it works.

Day 175: Spent a great day hiking the Friendship Trail near Port Colborne, and stopped at Jordan Harbour with a few other cachers on the way home. This abandoned ship, modeled after Jacque Cartier’s Grande Hermine, in which he discovered the St. Lawrence estuary in 1535. The original wooden hull was destroyed in a fire, leaving it in its current state.

Day 174: I was out nightcaching and finding munzees with some of the usual suspects, and fellow 365er and cacher, Gregory Pleau had an idea for a shot to promote this years 7th annual BFL(nightcaching) event. With 7 flashlights lined up on a small bridge in a Mississauga park, several of us began taking shots. This is my version…..
Day 172: Whenever I take a shot of a flower, my first motivation is the colour. Vibrant, intense colours, the symmetry of the flower’s bloom, all these things draw me to them. Despite my intent, I end up preferring the black and white, for reasons I can’t explain. When I first moved to Toronto, I had a neighbour at my first studio, painter Mike Hansen, who used to make these canvasses using encaustic. The canvasses would be built up with many layers, each layer obliterating the colour underneath, until there was little, if any evidence of the original colour. I suppose, like his paintings, I can still envision the colour, even after removing all trace of it.
Day 171: Throughout this project I have found that I keep returning to a couple locations that provide a wealth of ideas for shots, including the Distillery District where I captured today’s shot. I’m not sure these barrels are original and were put into use at one the distilleries that once operated here, but it is not hard to imagine that they were. A black and white treatment just seemed natural.

Day 169: Spent the day caching/mountain biking in Glen Major Forest with my son, and stopped for a quick cache on the way home at this shoe tree. We’ve seen quite a few shoes trees in the past, though I’ve never quite understood why they exist, and how those who start them, choose the tree.

Day 167: I have passed this sign in the Don Valley many times, and always wondered why it was where it was. The Don River is 200m away, and the elevation above the river itself is at least 20 feet, so it’s placement in the middle of a field is a little puzzling. I thought perhaps the area was a pond once, and has since grown in or was filled in by the city, however there is no evidence of such. Maybe vandals moved it as a joke? Whatever the reason, it has always caught my eye when I see it, and made me wonder…..

Day 166: When out geocaching, sometimes you can find some strange stuff. This is actually one of a series of caches with a Halloween theme, each cache using a different body part. This one was particularly gruesome, and even had red dye throughout it to simulate blood….
Day 165: I was working yet again way out in Uxbridge today and enjoyed a stop to take a bit of a hike and find a couple of caches. I decided to do a multiplicity type shot during one of the searches for a cache…
Day 164: Grabbed today’s shot nice and close to home, something I keep meaning to stop and shoot. I grew up in the printing trade, with a family business, and even used commercial printing techniques such as offset, letterpress and even stone litho in printmaking projects when I attended OCA. The small print shop my family ran, whose work was largely business cards, letterheads and such, eventually closed as digital processes provided a product at a much cheaper price. The growth in digital imaging has affected the trade at all levels, so today’s image has some meaning to me. The double exposure is the result of moving the camera near the end of the long exposure. I also desaturated some colour for the final result.

Day 163: Working out in Uxbridge today, I looked forward to the chance to get today’s shot somewhere other than downtown. Within minutes of leaving the jobsite for the 1 hour drive home, it started to rain steady, than quite heavily. I did manage two quick stops along the way for caches, keeping my eye open for something interesting. This metal Goat is a sculpture outside the Latcham Gallery in Whitchurch-Stouffville, by William Lishman.

Day 162: Visited Canoe Landing Park downtown, to find a cache hidden near a sculpture, “Big Red Canoe”. I spent some time checking out the other sculptures in the park, among them are a sculptural beaver dam, programmed tree lights, and giant fishing bobbers, all of which were designed by Vancouver author, artist and sculptor, Douglas Coupland.

Day 161: Stopped by Edwards Gardens this afternoon, hoping to see a little more in bloom than my last visit here. Don’t know my flowers well enough to put a label on this one…..

Day 159: After a longer than usual day at work, I begin heading home, and yet again today, the rain comes down. By the time I got home, it was coming down heavy, so a couple quick shots from the steps of my front door consist of today’s shot.
