I have wanted to tackle a 365 Project (366 in this case as it's a leap year) since my days at Ontario College of Art in the early 90's. But I knew myself well, and was certain it would end up incomplete like so many other projects in the past. I'm one of those people who always has more than a few projects on the go, and find myself jumping around between them like a madman afflicted with ADD. When I heard a small group of geocaching friends were going to attempt their own 365 Project, I decided that I would join in the fun, and that it might provide me the extra incentive to complete it. And besides, it will make an awesome photo album to look back on a single year in my life, day-by-day. And since painting has for my entire life, been my main focus creatively, the fact that this will be my first real photographic project with any sort of focus, is exciting, and should be a great learning experience.

Day 247: After a long drive this weekend to Ottawa, I headed north this morning to grab a couple caches by kayak in the Burks Falls area. The real highlight of the day was a stop at the Screaming Heads, a property west of Burks Falls, where the landscape is full of large concrete figures, among other wonderful surprises. I have been here numerous times before, but this would be my first visit at night….   and I had a plan. I wish I could have taken my time, and spent the night carefully creating some images but seeing that I was still a few hours from home, and had to work in the morning, I kind of rushed through this one. Getting those spheres perfect takes a bit of practise….

Day 245: Spent today driving to Ottawa from Toronto, for a big day tomorrow; move in day for my son’s first year at University of Ottawa. Of course there wasn’t any opportunity to stop for photos during the day, so a night shot was in order. My first idea was to head towards the parliament buildings and get a nice night shot there, but to be honest, after all day driving the last thing I wanted to deal with was trying to find parking, etc.  So I headed across the river to Gatineau, Quebec and Jacques Cartier Park to grab a couple geocaches, one of which was along a new boardwalk at the river’s edge. The boardwalk has a great view of downtown Ottawa, including the Parliament Buildings, but I quite liked the lines of the MacDonald-Cartier Bridge instead.

Day 242: I’ve seen this type of photo all over the internet, and just had to give it a try myself. This is my first attempt, and I think it turned out OK. I used a battery powered light stick, which gave a thicker, blurred ball. I think next time I will use a smaller light source like LED lights. I also need to wear something black, since the letters on my t-shirt can be seen within the spehere.

Day 241:  Two thirds of my yard is grapevines, with the type of grapes that are used for making wine. And I don’t even make wine. I’ve taken a few photos out among the grapevines though, so they are good for something.

Day 237: I knew I wouldn’t have much time for a photo, since it was straight from work to Orillia for some night time paddling to a geocache. I figured I’d better grab a couple shots of something, in case I didn’t get a shot tonight. Luckily, after grabbing lunch I parked right beside this dove.

Day 236: Headed down to the CNE tonight. The plan was some long exposure shots of the rides, but with the crowds of people I was wary of using a tripod just to have someone bump into it. So….  concentrated on some handheld shots of the bright lights and colours. Definitely have to head down here a couple more times before the CNE is finished for another year.

Day 233: I spotted this hand scrawled sign in front of a church not far from home. Now, I believe in some ideas that not all subscribe to, but faith healers is not one of them. I can’t help but think of the stereotypical side-show evangelist  praising the lord for making a blind man see again, or the boy who has been in a wheelchair all his life that gets up and walks for the first time. How often have we seen these “healers” portrayed as scam artists and con men, bilking the congregation in the name of Jesus. Now I’m sure there are those that believe in miracles such as these, and that is all fine, but I can’t help but see this sign as a warning that someone will be here to empty a bunch of people’s pockets and exploit their beliefs.  I hope not….

Day 231: Not the typical, picturesque sunset, but this is the view residents in the stockyards area of Toronto have had now for a couple of years. The stockyards area at Weston/St, Clair in the west end of Toronto used to be a thriving industrial neighbourhood dominated by slaughterhouses and abattoirs. They are still here but on a much smaller scale. Soon there will be yet another retail development complete with “big box” stores and fast food.

Day 230: I have been grabbing quick shots of these flowers in my front yard daily for a week now, usually when I leave for work, and when I get home. Not being a much of a gardener, I have no clue what they are, but they bloom yearly. Admittedly this shot is heavily photoshopped as I had to remove the small portion of a basement window in the background. It’s also not as sharp as I would like, but I quite like this one, so today’s daily flower shot finally makes it into this project.

Day 225: We spent the afternoon paddling on Wolf and Crab Lake today. One of the two caches we came looking for was atop Blueberry Hill at the south end of Crab Lake, where this photo was shot. Though not obvious in this photo, just like the entire weekend, the skies opened up for a quick torrential downpour.
